Blog Entry # 4 The Importance of being Aware of Bias
In my Cultural Diversity in
Education class, we have been discussing many different topics the Impact of
changes, The history of Multicultural Education, Race and Bias. The one I found
most interesting in are class discussion was being bias. Bias is caused to feel or show inclination or prejudice for or
against someone or something. the reason why and how this topic is
important for people to know is that because there is different bias. Cultural bias, also known as implicit bias,
involves those who perceive other cultures as being abnormal, outlying, or
exotic, simply based on a comparison to their own culture. In-group bias this type of bias refers to how
people are more likely to support or believe someone within their own social
group than an outsider. But the two main biases that you need to know and look
for is Implicit biases that is refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that
affect our understanding, actions and discussions in an unconscious manner. Explicit
biases are the attitudes and beliefs we have about a person or group on a
conscious level. When people feel threatened, they are more likely to draw
group boundaries to distinguish themselves from others. You need to that’s why it is important to be
aware of bias cause it can happened to you at any time. You might not know that
it's happening. That’s why people should not assume bias like for example you
can't join the volleyball team because your short and you are a guy.

ReplyDeleteHello Jazzmyn,
ReplyDeleteI was reading about race and bias in my communications text book last week and I find this topic very interesting! It's crazy that things like this happen every day, and sometimes people don't even realize that they are being biased about something. It's best to always avoid being biased about anyone, no matter what our differences are. Great job covering this topic!
