When food gets wasted it affects the environment in multiple ways. Such as all food production adds greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, and producing excess food uses unnecessary crop land, water and fertilizer. As food rots in landfills, it produces more of the greenhouse gas methane. When I was doing research about how much food gets wasted the percent came up as between 30 to 40 percent of the entire American food supply ends up wasted each year. When food gets wasted it goes to landfills sites where it rots and releases methane, a damaging greenhouse gas the food that gets wasted should be going to homeless shelters or places where people who can't afford to buy food.
