Blog Entry #2
My Blog will
be explaining why pronouncing names are important!
I recently had
a class discussion in my Educational Cultural Diversity class on why
pronouncing names is important. If you don’t
attempt to learn someone’s name that shows you don’t care. When you don’t pronounce
a student’s name correctly, you can cause them to feel uncomfortable and out of
place. If you are having trouble with
their name, then you can pull them aside later and asked them the correct pronunciation.
That way you won’t run the risk of embarrassing them by putting them on the
spot. Then you can practice learning it for
next time.
This happens a lot when someone reads my name for the first time. They pronounce it like (Kali-a) or (Kall-ia). It's Calia (Kuh-lia)! It's not 'a' as in cat, or 'o' as in hot. ヾ(≧へ≦)〃
ReplyDeleteThe way you stated this is really interesting. It is so important to make sure that everybody feels important, and your blog reflects this well. I completely agree with you.
ReplyDeleteHi Jazzmyn! I think that it's really cool of you to dedicate a blog post to talking about something important that you learned. In my opinion, this is exactly what blogs should be used for and your post accomplished that perfectly!
ReplyDeleteHello Jazzmyn. I really liked this post. I never understood why teachers didn't think it was important to know how to properly say their students names. I personally didn't have to go through this but a lot of my friends and family did. I would always correct them until they said it correctly because that's a huge part of their identity.
ReplyDeleteAs someone with a unique cultural name, hearing my name mispronounced has just become part of the norm. For the longest time I just lived with people mispronouncing it, but now I find it very disrespectful. My name is a part of my culture, respecting my name is respecting my culture.
ReplyDeleteHey, Jazzmyn. Your blog is looking pretty good so far. You have some good content and ideas, though you have room to keep digging into analysis and description to connect to your audience and create more significance. Don't forget about visual appeal and engagement as well (images, links, text formatting). Keep it up!
